HIDDEN SECRETS and PERSONAL FAVORITES

- An Insider's Viewpoint - Best Resorts For The Money -

WHAT MAKES A RESORT A GREAT VALUE? ... or ... ONE OF THE BEST RESORTS FOR THE MONEY?

DETERMINE YOUR VALUE QUOTIENT – take the time to THINK about your vacation and DETERMINE what is “worthwhile” and what is of lesser or little importance to you … THEN look for the resorts that you believe most closely fit into your measure of importance and worth with as few trade-offs as possible.

VALUE can be defined “worth as measured in usefulness or importance” – to get the most out of your vacation (or honeymoon), your  task is to, first, ask yourself “what do we want” and then to find out what resort or resorts will provide you with your wants. There will likely be some trade-offs, but the fewer the trade-offs you have the better value you will have for your vacation. DETERMINE YOUR PASSIONS and then work through some basic guidelines:

1.       Determine “what we want on this vacation” … it constantly surprises us how many people haven’t really made this determination … do you want “warm & fuzzy”? … quiet sophistication or an all-out party atmosphere? … maybe a combination of the two? … is a GREAT beach the key to your happiness or is it OUTSTANDING service? … Is golf, scuba, tennis, water skiing or sightseeing a primary factor in your travel plans? … or is it the “chill factor” (as in we just want to chill-out and veg…)? How about excellent food and drinks … or a large room with a view? In MOST instances it will be a combination of many of the above factors … put them in your order of importance THEN go to step #2;

2.       Determine your budget … and how long you want to stay on vacation. More often than not, these two items will go hand-in-hand because your budget (coupled to your choices in #1) may not let you stay as long as you’d like to stay! (or, happily, let you stay a few extra nights) … or … you may want to switch a few of your priorities around to help you find a resort which meets MOST of your “we wants” and is priced to let you stay longer.

3.       The trade-offs may have already begun … and now you can start determining where the “best value” may be for your trip … for example:

a.       Is it worth $500 to $1000 more to have an oceanview?

b.       Can you be happy with a few less primary “wants” for a nicer vacation resort?

c.       Is “the room” not as important as the other included offerings or is the room more important than those inclusions?

4.       Now, consider something very few people think about … who are you going to be vacationing with? Sometimes a great vacation experience is determined by the people you meet, the interaction you have and the “comfort level” you have on that vacation. As an example, a fun-loving, party-hardy couple with a rather limited budget may not feel completely at home (and at ease) in a low-key, quiet and high-end sophisticated environment … or … the couple wanting to just get away from it all may not be terribly happy with a resort catering to the “action set”, or a resort with a lot of families and children! NOT ALL RESORTS ARE FOR EVERYBODY … and the last thing you want to do is to feel “a bit out of place” when you are on vacation!!!

RLT CHOICES FOR THE VERY BEST RESORTS FOR THE MONEY

BEST RESORT OVERALL
FOR THE MONEY

#1 ROYAL PLANTATION
(ADULTS ONLY)
Ocho Rios, Jamaica

At First Glance ... A quiet escape ... more reserved nightlife ... great service.

Logic ... Suites Only ( with even the lowest category of room an Oceanfront Junior Suite with an oceanview ! ) with 24-hour room service, mini-bars and a staff with a great attitude and serving only 84 guest suites ... more sophisticated than other Sandals/Beaches Resorts with a superior European Spa.

Warm & Fuzzy Quotient ... a 9 out of 10 ... a quintessential Caribbean Resort - small and quaint - drink & snack service on the beach - no disco, just dancing on the verandah to nightly combos ... great attitudes starting from General Manager and working on down the chain of command.

BEST LESS COSTLY RESORTS
FOR THE MONEY

#1 COUPLES SWEPT AWAY
(ADULTS ONLY)
Negril, Jamaica

Logic ... Junior (Verandah) Suites throughout ... at this time we and our travelers have rated this resort "best all-inclusive in Jamaica" -- those Sandals devotees who have also stayed at Swept Away rate it "a step up" from Sandals in food, service and accommodations for the money.

#2 AVENTURA SPA PALACE
(ADULTS ONLY)
Riviera Maya (South of Cancun), Mexico

At First Glance ... Probably the singularly best Adults Only All-inclusive resort on Mexico's Caribbean beaches.

Logic ... Well-rounded resort - good food, good sports program ... now that Aventura Palace and Spa Palace are "combined" as one property, you have better selection of rooms and atmospheres.

Warm & Fuzzy Quotient ... a 6 out of 10 ... too busy and large to be terribly warm & fuzzy.

Other Benefits ... Golf package (book it at time of making your room reservations) is very cost effective. The Palace Resorts "Passport" gives you coupons to everything from Spa treatments to car rental. Property offers unlimited free tours for most extended stays.

RLT Notes ... There are any number of less expensive (but not as nice) and nicer (but more expensive) resorts in Cancun to Playacar hotel and resort districts ... this resort is the best value.

BEST SOPHISTICATED RESORTS

#2 LADERA RESORT
(ADULTS ONLY) -- NOT ALL-INCLUSIVE
Soufriere, Southern St. Lucia

At First Glance ... A sophisticated boutique hotel with only 27 suites and villas ... this resort has been selected as 1 of the Top 10 Small Hotels In The World (by Conde Nast Travel) and 1 of the 10 Best Romantic Spots in the Caribbean (by Caribbean Travel & Life).

Logic ...  This is truly a Romantic Getaway ... set into the mountainside of St. Lucia's Pitons and overlooking the Caribbean Sea ... nearly every suite or villa has its own private plunge pool ... and romantic view.

Warm & Fuzzy Quotient ... a 10 out of 10 ... all the suites and villas only have THREE WALLS with the 4th being open to the mountain breezes and a view of the Caribbean ... and yet, the design of this resort allows for complete privacy for each guest. Nights are simple with the "most exciting" element being a Monday night managers cocktail party with music and dancing, and the Tcholit Bar, which  is always hopping.

Other Benefits ... "Dasheene" is an award-winning restaurant on property and recognized as one (if not "the") finest restaurant in St. Lucia.

RLT Notes ... Unless you want to do nothing more than lay back and relax this fabulous resort may drive you "stir-crazy" if you stay more than 4 nights -- but -- for those who really (we mean really and truly) love to lay back, read a good book, float aimlessly for hours in the pool, and eat outstanding meals under the stars -- this is absolutely THE BEST.

BEST HIGH-END RESORTS
FOR THE MONEY

#1 JUMBY BAY RESORT
(DISCERNING FAMILIES)
Private Island, Antigua

At First Glance ... Spacious Suites Only ... top-end service and food.

Logic ... For the moderately active couple or family ... allows couples plenty of "personal space" and privacy while not being an Adults Only property.

Warm & Fuzzy Quotient ... a 8 out of 10 ...  once again, it's hard to put a "10" on a family resort.

Other Benefits ... this is a private enclave of some 300+ acres of lush vegetation and a haven for naturalists, the island features three beaches including the Pasture Bay Beach, on the island's windward side, home to endangered species of turtles, rare birds and sheep

RLT Notes ... Service and lifestyle are everything here!

#2 KING PACIFIC LODGE
(DISCERNING FAMILIES with OLDER CHILDREN)
Princess Royal Island, British Columbia, Canada

At First Glance ... Northern British Columbia is one of the last corners of the earth to offer absolute wilderness and The Great Bear Rainforest is the largest intact temperate rainforest left on earth. The setting for King Pacific Lodge is unspoiled nature as far as the eye can see. Range after range of mountains. Virgin forests, mountain streams, pristine lakes. The air is clear and pure. It's like being present on the morning of creation...but better!

Logic ... One of the most beautiful and unique experiences for couples in love!

Warm & Fuzzy Quotient ... as close to a 10 as a "family" resort can get !

RLT Notes ... For couples wanting to get away from the "beach scene" and/or enjoy fishing, hiking, wildlife, and a laid-back sophisticated soft-adventure getaway we can think of no better destination.
