utilizes native grasses and the thousand year old lava dunes that make
up most of the surrounding topography.
The Arnold Palmer / Ed Seay design is both
challenging and beautiful. The Scottish Links style design along with

Recreation
Stargazing
The sky is so consistently clear over Kohala
that even in midmorning, the moon can still be seen hanging over the
ocean. Stargazing is one of the most popular activities offered by the
hotel. A high-powered telescope is set up four nights a week. While
guests view constellations, galaxies and planets, an astronomer shares
his knowledge of the wonders of the universe.
Tennis
The Seaside Tennis Club at Mauna Kea Resort is
one of the best tennis facilities in Hawaii. Eleven Plexipave courts
are arrayed along the shoreline, with two more nearby the Hotel's
beachfront wing. A shaded lanai, men's and women's locker rooms, video
service, ball machine, tournament planning, racquet-stringing and
individual game-matching are just a few of the services provided.
Water Sports
In addition to the freshwater pools and
poolside Jacuzzi, guests can enjoy the white sands of lovely crescent
shores of Kauna'oa Bay or # 1 rated Hapuna Beach. Activities include
swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, outrigger canoe paddling, sailing,
kayaking, catamaran riding, whale watching and deep-sea fishing.
Windsurfing is available just 20 minutes south of our resorts.
Children's Program
Mauna Kea Resort offers our younger guests a
"cool" way to enjoy days of fun under the sun. While you relax by the
pools or beaches, or play a challenging game of golf at the renowned
Mauna Kea or Hapuna golf courses, your children ("keiki") can take
part in a wide variety of programs including:
Hawaiian arts and crafts
T-shirt painting
Pool swims
Beach treasure/scavenger hunts
It's all part of the resort's year-round
children's program for guests age 5 to 12.
Age-appropriate activities are designed by the
program counselors to both entertain and educate the children about
the culture, arts and crafts, and music of Hawaii. Excursions such as
beachcombing and other activities, let them experience aspects of the
Island's lifestyle.
Full and half-day sessions are available seven
days a week.
Whether they sign up for the Keiki Club or
not, children who stay at Mauna Kea Resort receive a special gift bag
at check-in, with age-appropriate amenities chosen just for them: a
toy-filled sandpail for infants to three-year-olds, a resort activity
book and crayons, logo water bottle and cartoon water-frisbee for kids
aged 4-7, and the water bottle, activity book and crayons and special
"sport-keeper" lanyard, great for holding on to room keys, seashells
and other treasures, for those aged 8-12.
