Golf
The Francis H. I'i Brown North and South courses--are remarkable if
for nothing more than the vast fields of dark black lava out of which
they were constructed. The original 18 holes were opened in 1981, with
Homer Flint and Raymond Cain as the lead architects. It was a visually
spectacular course that featured one par-3 hole crossing a wide
Pacific inlet, another par-3 playing into a coliseum of lava, and many
holes whose primary challenge was to hit the bright green fairways and
greens, avoiding the lava formations in the landing areas and on both
sides of the fairways. The course received rave reviews from the
moment it opened.
In 1991, Mauna Lani felt it necessary to add another 18 holes, so
they called in the Honolulu architectural firm of
Nelson/Wright/Haworth. With the land configuration available to them,
Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright elected to split the existing course
into two nines and add nine new holes to each side. The results were
remarkable, with the signature par-3s having been split between the
courses, and several new holes on each course playing down to or in
front of the Pacific.
North Course
The North Course, although a resort course, is excellent for
tournament play. Built on a lava bed much older than the Kaniku flow
(on which the South Course lies), it is characterized by rolling
terrain punctuated by Kiawe (mesquite) forests. Trees often come into
play on this course. No. 17, a par three tucked into a natural lava
amphitheater, is the resort's second signature hole and a favorite "I
was here" photo spot. A 230-acre protected archaeological district
lies on the northern boundary of the course. Herds of feral goats
frequent the entire course, moving from hole to hole throughout the
day.
South Course
The South Course, renown as the former home to the annual Senior
Skins Game from 1990 - 2000, snakes through the stark, rugged a'a lava
of the prehistoric Kaniku lava flow. Volcano goddess Pele reigns
supreme on this course. If she favors you, balls hit into the lava
will miraculously bounce back into the fairway. If not, kiss them
goodbye. Besides great golf, the challenging course offers the player
a panorama of mountain and ocean views. The South Course is home to
No. 15, one of the most photographed over-the-water golf holes in the
world.
