Mexico's Caribbean coast was once the home of the
Mayan civilization whose greatness is still being discovered in the
tropical forest fringed by a turquoise sea. Legend has it that
poetry can be heard from the whispering ocean. Within this
waterfront virgin wilderness, a new resort has emerged totally in
sympathy with its environment. At night, only flaming torches light
the grounds so that guests can enjoy the beauty of the starlit sky.
Overlooking eight miles of pristine beach, the resort encompasses a
rejuvenating health spa with treatments only enjoyed by the Mayan
Royalty and a gourmet restaurant where Mediterranean and Yucatan
cuisine combine to create a poetry all of their own. Individual
villas, authentically built of native wood and stone in keeping with
the region, have private pools, total luxury and an intimacy you
won't find anywhere else! Small Luxury Hotels of the World is
pleased that Ikal del Mar made it through Hurricane Wilma with
limited inconveniences.

Ikal del Mar is a secluded refuge carved from the primitive Mayan
jungle near the small village of Xcalacoco. To ensure that the
resort will blend seamlessly with this undeveloped territory.
Twenty-nine villas, each with a private pool, have been carefully
constructed from natural wood and stones indigenous to the region. In keeping with its serene setting, the resort will allow no
motorized vehicles on the property. At night, artificial lighting
will not dim star-filled skies. Torches, adding to the tranquil
ambience of this unique retreat, will light the grounds instead.
The jungle was here before us and we believe that we are
intruding upon it. For this reason, paths and walkways carefully
meander avoiding older growths. Younger trees are allowed to grow
within the paths, further reinforcing our philosophy.
