Top 101 Hotels in the world
Very Meg Ryan: she made When a Man Loves a Woman here with
Andy Garcia. But the real romantic extravaganza is the hotel's
dramatic seaside villa, El Murmullo. It takes the biscuit in the
villa-attached-to-hotel boom. It has four suites, one with its own
garden and plunge-pool, plus an infinity-pool hanging off the
terrace over the sea and a water bar for margaritas. The main hotel
has 10 private pool suites suspended high on a cliff on the
Zihuatanejo Bay, with the Pacific glittering below - the main pool
seems airborne. "La casa que canta" means "the house that sings";
owned by a Frenchman, Jacques Baldassari, it has been designed with
flair; adobe walls, Mexican folk art, a Frida Kahlo chair here, a
hand-painted chest there. Fresh petals are strewn on the beds every
night (less tinky-winky than it sounds), the food is splendid and,
yippee, no under-16s are allowed. Z, as Zihuatanejo is known to the
savvy traveler, is charming; real markets and a real sense of place
in a chic, compelling corner of Mexico.

GOLD LIST - World's Best Places to Stay
The Americas, MEXICO
"Carved into a cliff so you don't even know
it's there," this tranquil adobe getaway overlooks "one of the most
beautiful bays in Mexico." No two rooms are like, but all have local
art and furniture. Turndown service includes ephemeral flower
displays placed on the bedspreads. Expect "sophisticated Mexican
cuisine" at the restaurant.

A quiet "kid free" cliffside resort that has "bright, spacious"
rooms adorned with Mexican art, it's "a very romantic place for
couples." The "adobe walls and thatched roofs" "make it feel very
natural." Staff are "nice about everything - absolutely nothing is a
hassle" - and "the local seafood is delicious." "There aren't many
organized activities," but you can take "a day-trip drive to nearby
Ixtapa." |
